How to Install AbrasoGuard

AbrasoGuard installation overview

Before you begin

Confirm the hydraulic system is shut down, depressurized, secured against movement, and cool enough to work on. Follow the equipment and hose manufacturers’ service procedures. AbrasoGuard is external abrasion protection; it is not a hydraulic fitting, pressure-containing ferrule, or certified burst-containment device.

What you need

  • Correct AbrasoGuard sleeve and two retaining rings for the verified assembly
  • A clean, undamaged hose assembly
  • A crimping tool and die setup validated for the selected ring, sleeve, hose, and fitting
  • Inspection and measuring tools required by your shop procedure

Installation steps

  1. Inspect the hose, fitting, and routing. Replace a damaged or unserviceable hose; do not cover damage.
  2. Measure and cut sleeve long enough to cover the abrasion zone with slack for normal hose movement. Do not install the fabric taut.
  3. Slide the sleeve over the hose and position it over the expected rub area.
  4. Place a retaining ring over the fabric-covered portion of the hose near the fitting. The sleeve remains loose and is retained between the fitting crimp and the separate AbrasoGuard ring. Do not place the AbrasoGuard ring over the fitting ferrule.
  5. Crimp only with a tooling setup and finished diameter your organization has validated for this exact assembly. AbrasoGuard does not supply a universal crimp dimension.
  6. Repeat at the other end when required, preserving enough sleeve slack for the hose's full range of motion.
  7. Inspect the finished installation. Confirm the sleeve stays positioned, the hose can move normally, and the ring does not damage or restrict the assembly.
  8. Reinspect after initial operation and as part of routine maintenance.

Critical warning — do not over-crimp

The retaining ring holds the sleeve. It is not intended to crush the hydraulic hose. Excessive crimp force or an incorrect die can damage the hose, reinforcement, sleeve, fitting, or ring. Stop if the ring loads the hose, distorts the fitting, cuts the fabric, or produces an unvalidated finished diameter.

Damaged hose warning

Do not use AbrasoGuard to conceal or repair a damaged, leaking, blistered, kinked, corroded, exposed-wire, or otherwise unserviceable hydraulic hose. Replace the hose according to the equipment and hose manufacturers' procedures.

Limitations

AbrasoGuard is for external abrasion-sleeve retention only. It does not increase hose pressure rating, repair damage, replace correct routing or clamps, or make every ring, sleeve, fitting, hose, or tool combination compatible.

Stop and correct the installation if the sleeve is taut, the hose is damaged, the ring contacts the fitting ferrule incorrectly, routing is restricted, or the finished crimp has not been validated.
